One Language

Dinis, King of Portugal. He was the eldest son of Afonso III of Portugal by his second wife, Beatrice of Castile, and grandson of Alfonso X of Castile (known as the Wise), Dinis succeeded his father in 1279. Cultured and a lover of the arts, he wrote poetry (became known as “King Poet”) and is said to have authored 173 poems. He decreed the Portuguese language as the official language of the Kingdom (in replacement of Latin). He had the first Portuguese university created during his long reign (46 years) which was boosted by the Portuguese language and culture.
